Alaska Car Insurance: Finding Your Way Around Requirements

Like most states in the US Alaska requires that its motorists carry liability insurance. Liability means that if a driver causes an accident, regardless of the circumstances (poor weather, running a stop light, driving under the influence) their insurance company will pay for medical expenses and property repair for the drivers whose vehicle was struck.

Minimum liability coverage varies from state to state; in AK drivers are required to have a 50/100/25 liability policy, meaning that if they are in an accident in which only one other person was involved their insurance will pay for fifty thousand dollars of that person’s medical expenses, if there are multiple persons involved (such as a car containing a driver and two passengers) insurance will pay for one hundred thousand dollars of their combined expenses, and if the accident caused property damage (such as by striking a stop sign or damaging a building) twenty five thousand dollars will be allotted to make necessary repairs (this amount also includes damages inflicted upon the vehicle of the other driver). These levels are higher than those found in many other states; however, motorists are still encouraged to carry more than the minimum amount of coverage.

For more details on the specific state requirements motorists are encouraged to visit the Alaska Division of Insurance at http://www.dced.state.ak.us/insurance/ or contact either their Juneau or Anchorage office at (907) 465-2515 or  (907) 269-7900, respectively.
