Oklahoma Car Insurance: Requirements

Liability insurance is required for all Oklahoma vehicles. OK liability insurance will cover the cost of medical car and auto repair to the person and vehicle injured in an accident for which the insured was responsible and must provide coverage to the tune of twenty five thousand dollars for medical expenses incurred by an individual driver, fifty thousand dollars for combined medical expenses of all of the occupants of a vehicle and twenty five thousand dollars to provide for repair to public and private property, including the vehicle of the victim.

As medical expenses and repair costs can quickly rise in excess of these amounts and the insured will be held personally liable for the difference it is strongly recommended that a liability policy greater than the minimum be purchased.

Comprehensive and collision insurance is not required unless a vehicle is under lien but is still recommended. If the insured is responsible for an accident and has no collision insurance they will be held singly responsible for repairs to their vehicle. Collision coverage will provide for repairs up to the Kelley Blue Book value of the car, and if costs exceed this amount the car will be totaled and the owner will receive the cash value of the car.

Gap coverage may be available along with comprehensive coverage for vehicles under lien whose Blue Book value is less than the remaining balance on their auto loan. Gap coverage will help make up the difference in the event that the vehicle must be totaled.

Uninsured motorist insurance is not required in Oklahoma but is strongly recommended. Many states in the US do not require their drivers to purchase liability. Uninsured motorist coverage provides assistance to the victims of the accidents these uninsured individuals cause, as well as to those who find themselves the victims of a hit and run.
