For a complete listing of guidelines pertaining to state insurance requirements all Wyoming residents should contact the State of Wyoming Insurance Department in Cheyenne at 1-800-438-5768 or view their website at http://insurance.state.wy.us/; however, the basic premise behind purchasing auto insurance is very simple
Wyoming requires that all of its residents purchase a minimum liability policy, although with the rising costs of healthcare and auto repair all drivers are advised to purchase more than the minimum requirement.
Liability minimums in WY are:
Liability covers only those costs associated with the other party involved in an accident for which the insured is responsible; it does not pay for any of the repairs that may be necessary for the vehicle of the insured. For this reason it is recommended that all drivers carry comprehensive insurance; if a car is currently under lien it will probably be a requirement. Comprehensive coverage will pay for any necessary repairs to the vehicle following either an accident with another vehicle that was caused by the insured or an accident over which the insured had no control, such as those associated with inclement weather conditions or the local wildlife.
In light of the fact that not every state in the US requires its drivers to purchase a basic liability policy it is also suggested that every driver should purchase uninsured motorist coverage on their vehicle. WY Uninsured motorist coverage will pay for damages resulting from either an accident involving an uninsured individual or a hit and run.
