Gas Tips

Is your wallet tired of taking a beating every time you need gas? I know mine is and my vehicle actually gets decent gas mileage. I can only imagine how difficult it must be for SUV and truck owners who are spending upwards of $75 every week on gas. It’s during times like these that we really have to take every measure possible to conserve gas and spend less at the station. The good news is most people aren’t taking advantage of these tips yet and could stand to increase gas mileage by over 15%. If you think you’re car isn’t getting peak performance out of the gas tank, try out some of these helpful gas tips.

Gas Tips

  • Is your vehicle hauling a lot of weight around? Remove any heavy items you don’t necessarily need in your car whenever possible. It’s estimated that removing 200 pounds of weight can increase your fuel economy by 5%.
  • One commonly neglected part of vehicles is the air filter. Over time, your air filter gets clogged with dirt, which can reduce your vehicle’s mpg. Fortunately, it’s an easy fix as you can buy air filters at just about any auto repair center and their just as easy to change on your own.
  • Do you get your oil changed every three thousand miles as recommended? If you’re like most people, you probably don’t get it changed quite as often as you should and it’s hurting your engine’s efficiency. Get your oil changed when it should be or you could save even more money by doing it yourself.
  • Don’t drive out of your way just to fill up at a station who’s gas is slightly less expensive. Unless the difference is over ten cents, you probably won’t see much savings, if any at all, by driving miles out of your way. Simply by your gas while you’re already out or on the way home.
  • If it’s not overly hot, you can turn your air conditioning off and increase your mpg a little. However, it may not make a big difference in newer vehicles and rolling your windows down may actually hurt your gas mileage. Driving with your windows down creates drag which makes your car work harder, especially on the freeway.
  • While driving, don’t go over the speed limit. Not only is it illegal, but going over the speed limit is generally bad for gas mileage. Most cars get the best mileage at around 55mph, there’s also tremendous wind resistance at anything over that.
