If you’re a young driver and under the age of 25, you’re probably paying an arm and a leg for your car insurance. While car insurance isn’t really cheap at any age, young drivers are considered the biggest risk on the road, so naturally they get the worst insurance rates. For whatever the reason, car insurance companies generally see 25 years old as the magic age – the age when a driver finally matures and becomes eligible for a less expensive insurance rate. Here we’ll look at some of the reasons why 25 years old is the magic age and how you can still get a lower rate before 25.
Why 25?
- Once you turn 25, car insurance companies believe you’ve finally got some significant driving experience under your belt. After all, you’ve probably had a license since you were 16 so you’ve been driving for nearly ten years.
- To take a scientific view, studies show that there are major differences in the frontal cortex of young driver’s brains when compared to more mature drivers. This is important because the frontal cortex is said to process reasoning and decision making. Until the brain matures, younger people are said to take more risks because the brain processes information differently.
- Studies show that driver’s talking on cell phones are actually more likely to have an accident than a driver under the influence of alcohol. Studies also show that young drivers are more likely to drive while on the phone, put the two together and the odds of an accident double.
- While younger females are more prone to accidents under 25, males appear to be even more at risk. One statistic points out that males under the age of 23 are four times more likely to be involved in a fatal accident than the average driver.
Under 25 Discounts
- One way to possibly lower your car insurance rates, no matter what your age, is to take a defensive driving course. Some car insurance companies will discount your rates after the class, although keep in mind that the class will cost money too.
- Another way to lower rates is to actually do good in school. If you’re enrolled full time in school and maintain at least a 3.0 grade point average, you may be eligible for a good student discount.
- If you’re already done with school, you may also be able to get a discount for your diploma as some companies offer discounts for bachelor’s or graduate degrees.
