Women and Car Insurance

There are a lot of different stereotypes out there regarding men and women, such as all guys like sports and all women like to shop, but how well do they really hold up when put under the microscope? If you did a conclusive study about them, you’d probably find that most stereotypes are not very accurate among genders. One of the typical labels you’ve probably heard purported by men is that women are bad drivers, a stereotype that many women would beg to differ. Like most gender labels, there’s probably very little truth to it, in fact, there’s a lot of evidence to the contrary. Perhaps the biggest piece of evidence to disprove this stereotype is the fact that women generally receive less expensive rates on their car insurance than men. If they’re paying less money for car insurance, they must not be bad drivers right?

Why do Women Receive Better Rates?

So why exactly do women receive less expensive car insurance rates than their male counterparts? One of the main reasons is that women on a whole are involved in less car accidents than men. Out of the accidents that women are involved in, they are typically less costly and damaging than the accidents men are involved in. There’s also evidence to support the claim that women commit fewer traffic violations while driving. Not only does all this allow women to have lower car insurance rates, it all but disapproves the bad drive stereotype. Does this mean men are actually the bad drivers? Possibly, but not so fast, as there is some other reasons why women tend to get lower car insurance rates that aren’t at all related to driving skill. For instance, women purchase fewer high end sports car or luxury vehicles compared to men. These vehicles are much more expensive to insure, so women get lower rates by driving less expensive vehicles. It seems to actually lend credence to another stereotype - men are more interested in cars than women. Men want the expensive car with shiny rims, a monster engine, and all the luxuries that come with it, while women don’t seem to be as extravagant. Most women would still like a nice car, but it appears to be a much bigger concern for males. So while it’s clear why women typically receive lower car insurance rates than males, the jury’s still out about which gender is the better the driver.
