Zero-Tolerance Citations & Insurance Policies

My son received a zero-tolerance citation last year. He has completed all of the steps he needed to take to have his regular license reinstated. A few days ago, my car insurance company notified me that our policy is being canceled after 25 years with the insurer. I need to find a new policy, but where do I begin?

Answer

Your insurance company likely canceled your policy because, with your son as a driver, the insurer was facing too much risk in covering you. Young men have the highest insurance rates of all demographics, and a zero-tolerance violation added to that may have made your son almost uninsurable. You have several options. First, you could remove your son from your policy and remain with your current insurer. You would probably have no trouble keeping your policy in force as long as the risk your son represents is taken out of the equation. Secondly, you could try to find a policy with a different insurer that will insure you and your son in spite of his past violation. You will undoubtedly pay higher premiums, but shopping around for a new policy will help you select the insurers with the lowest rates for your circumstances.
