Cheapest States to Be Insured In

I'm thinking about moving to the west coast at the end of the year. I'm trying to find out what states have the lowest auto insurance rates.

If you’ve been handling auto insurance for any length of time in your life, then you’re probably aware that rates for auto insurance are dependent on a wide variety of factors. How much you pay is based on your age, your vehicle, your driving history, your specific address and which state you live in among other areas. So which states have the cheapest auto insurance rates? Generally speaking, there’s no single state that is the cheapest but there are a handful that consistently have the lowest rates for their drivers, and it’s fairly easy to see why.

Midwestern/Rural States

Chalk it up as yet another reason to live in flyover country, states like Kansas, Montana, Wyoming and Oklahoma tend to have the best auto insurance rates for its citizens. The reasoning behind these lower rates – especially the more southern stats – is the lack of population density. The more people you are around when you drive, the greater your likelihood of having an auto accident. Imagine yourself living near miles of cornfields with only two neighbors who owned one car between them. Contrast that daily “commute” to that of someone living in New York City. Big difference in risk and likelihood of an accident, right? Getting insurance in these states is not only less expensive, but it also is easier to come by with fewer qualifications that might otherwise disqualify you (or a teen) for a policy.

Lowering Your Insurance Rate

If you are interested in lowering your auto insurance rates there are some things you can do to bring the price of your policy down whether you live in New York City or Omaha:

  • Increase your deductible: Instead of having a very low deductible you’re your insurance in case of an accident, you are better off raising your deductible to a level that you could comfortably save up for and managing it that way, saving the money on the premiums.
  • Combine insurance policies: Insuring your home and your auto or your boat and your car, or any other type of insurance that your auto insurance company offers is a way to get a bulk discount usually.
  • Ask for and make sure you’re receiving all discounts: Most insurance companies offer a whole host of different types of discounts to their policy holders Unfortunately not all of them are as forthcoming as they should be about volunteering those discounts, so it’s up to you to ask every so often.
  • Shop for better rates regularly: Things change in life (like your age), so you should be checking at least once a year to see if you can get better rates with a different auto insurance company. Comparing quotes is the best way to make sure you stay on the bottom of the premiums pile.
